INTRODUCTION briefly to indicate the variety of avian vocal systems, and to provide a perspective from which Songbirds have both an esthetic and a scientific to focus on the oscine songbirds. Readers impact on our lives. Scientifically, the highly developed vocal communication of this group, sharing as it does a number of parallels with speech, has made songbirds especially suited for the study of complex, learned vocal communication at every level, from its molecular biology to its evolution. This chapter is about how birdsong is produced. How do birds generate such a variety of sounds and what vocal gymnastics are required to produce them? The vocal system is the interface between the bird's brain and his song. Knowing how it functions, and coming to appreciate its limitations as well as its capabilities, is important in understanding vocal communication. Birdsong is the product of the carefully coordinated activity of many different muscles. Some of these are associated with the vocal organ but many belong I

The evolutionary convergence of hearing in a parasitoid fly and its cricket host.
Parasitism is a widespread and diverse life strategy that connects species throughout the animal kingdom. Female parasitoid flies of the genus Ormia must find a specific cricket host on which to deposit their parasitic maggots. To reproduce, female flies must perform the same task as female crickets: find a singing male cricket. These flies have evolved a unique hearing organ that allows them t...
متن کاملThe Cercal Organ May Provide Singing Tettigoniids a Backup Sensory System for the Detection of Eavesdropping Bats
Conspicuous signals, such as the calling songs of tettigoniids, are intended to attract mates but may also unintentionally attract predators. Among them bats that listen to prey-generated sounds constitute a predation pressure for many acoustically communicating insects as well as frogs. As an adaptation to protect against bat predation many insect species evolved auditory sensitivity to bat-em...
متن کاملVocal technique in a group of Middle Eastern singers.
OBJECTIVE We aimed to report on the vocal technique in a group of Middle Eastern singers. SUBJECTS AND METHOD A total of 78 Middle Eastern singers were assessed. Demographic data included age, gender, training status and number of years of singing. All singers had laryngeal videoendostroboscopy. Description and grading of posture, tension, type of breathing, type of phonation, resonance and t...

AIMS To assess whether individual parameters or combinations of voice range profile parameters (also called 'features') are able to yield a clear cluster separation with which three basic female voice categories can be discriminated and can provide a basis for settling the issue of voice classification. METHODS The voice range profiles of 206 female conservatory singing students were recorded...
متن کاملProsthetic Avian Vocal Organ Controlled by a Freely Behaving Bird Based on a Low Dimensional Model of the Biomechanical Periphery
Because of the parallels found with human language production and acquisition, birdsong is an ideal animal model to study general mechanisms underlying complex, learned motor behavior. The rich and diverse vocalizations of songbirds emerge as a result of the interaction between a pattern generator in the brain and a highly nontrivial nonlinear periphery. Much of the complexity of this vocal beh...
متن کاملPrevalence of absolute pitch: a comparison between Japanese and Polish music students.
Comparable large-scale surveys including an on-site pitch-naming test were conducted with music students in Japan and Poland to obtain more convincing estimates of the prevalence of absolute pitch (AP) and examine how musical experience relates to AP. Participants with accurate AP (95% correct identification) accounted for 30% of the Japanese music students, but only 7% of the Polish music stud...
